Peloton Tests Prime Video and YouTube TV access on its consoles
Prime Video and YouTube TV to be available on Peloton screens as Entertainment Workouts
Building on its recently announced rebranding Peloton will soon offer direct access to streaming entertainment content while exercising with Amazon Prime Video and YouTube TV. It was also just announced on July 28th that it has added testing Netflix as well.
Peloton will officially support video streaming on its fitness equipment — something members have wanted for years. This feature is currently available to some Peloton members in the United States. Members will be able to stream entertainment content from Amazon Prime Video and YouTube TV directly on their tablets while working out. The test includes the Bike, Bike+, Tread, Tread+, and Peloton Row.
This option upgrades the "Just Ride" or "Just Walk/Run" workouts.
Goodbye blank screen :)
Now you will be able to bike or run watching the latest Jack Ryan Season 4 adventures which started June 30, 2023. (Prime video subscription required sign-up and get 30 days free) That’s pretty cool!
Until now, Peloton has only offered official Peloton content without any ability to access external content. Now, members can log into their Amazon and YouTube and soon Netflix accounts through their Peloton display and watch their favorite shows.
Sadly, you cannot simultaneously take a regular cycling class with a Peloton instructor and have a separate window open for your favorite TV show, as there is no picture-in-picture capability on Peloton equipment as of yet.
Seamless Integration of Streaming Services
The user experience for YouTube TV and Amazon Prime Video on a Peloton is a great option. The SoulCycle at-Home bike has had a similar feature since its launch in 2020. You will still see all your stats like cadence and resistance on the Bike and distance, speed, etc. on treadmills.
You will be able to use Bluetooth and heart rate settings and start and stop your workout like always, but you will be using a new bar introduced at the top of the screen. On the Tread, this bar provides an option to select whether your workout should be recorded as a walk or a run.
Recording / Tracking Entertainment Workouts
Workouts will be recorded to your Peloton profile as an "Entertainment" workout. Any distance covered – such as miles cycled, ran, walked, or rowed — will be added to your monthly total. An "Entertainment" workout will also count as a class in that type of workout (ride, run, walk, or row), so it still will count toward milestones and challenges to maintain your activity streak.
Beta Test Rollout and Availability
Note that this Entertainment feature has not fully launched – it is currently only in beta testing with a randomized group of members. If you do not see this feature on your hardware device over the next few days, it likely won't be added to your device until the full public rollout.
Subscription Requirement for Third-Party Services
When you start one of the services for the first time, Peloton alerts you that it is a third-party site and that you must have a subscription to that service to use it. It keeps your login information for the next time you work out with the Entertainment option, so that's cool.
In the End – Final Thoughts
Watching TV streaming will make many Peloton members extremely happy as they will have the option to watch their favorite programs directly on their bikes, treadmill, or rower screen. Whether this is a good option for achieving fitness goals remains to be seen, but this is what users have been asking for, so Peloton should expand to offer all streaming platforms as soon as possible.
Article: Update, July 30th, 2023
Some users have mentioned they cannot find Prime Video. Peloton will not confirm or deny whether Prime Video is to stay included. Testing of Netflix has been also added to the streaming list.
