Project Highland
The latest Tesla Model 3 refresh is called Project Highland will make its production easier due to fewer parts required for assembly. The new Model 3 uses GIGA castings, reducing costs for Tesla as they continue to modify pricing to match demand and manage operating margins.
Speculative Features of the Model 3 Refresh
The Tesla Model 3 refresh is rumored to include - steer-by-wire, redesigned multicolor ambient lighting inside, an improved sound system, and improved seats for more comfort. The steer-by-wire is additional to the standard Tesla steering, considering that many markets require a mechanical version. Refresh rumors are buzzing, so don’t believe everything – it is all speculative at this stage with nothing finalized til specifications are officially released by Tesla.
The taillights might change from the current horizontal LED indicators to the amber vertical turn signals which will look cool and a little more futuristic looking.
Enhanced FSD and new Camera
The test-refreshed Model 3’s driving around California appears to have updated cameras for the Hardware 4 Autopilot computer, similar to the Cybertruck. Two new cameras on the sides and an additional bumper camera.
A Model 3 Project Highland may get the Hardware 4.0 computer as well. This could deliver a clearer view of the surroundings, improved Full-Self Driving (FSD) functionality, a wider field of view, and enhanced processing capabilities. A refreshed Model 3 could also come with Tesla Vision, the brand’s camera-based Autopilot system, that no longer relies on ultrasonic sensors.
Other features to look for
Tesla Model 3 will get a redesigned front end with new headlights and bumper and a rear end with new taillights.
A diffuser appears to have been added to the rear of the refreshed Tesla Model 3. The diffuser increases aerodynamics by redirecting airflow. The design and purpose of the diffuser are to help reduce drag and to create downforce by facilitating the airflow underneath the vehicle underbody, improving the Model 3s ability to cut through the air.
Another rumor is the wood trim on the interior will be replaced with a fabric finish, possibly the same Alcantara found in the Model S and Model X electric vehicles.
Freemont Factory Closure for Upgrades
In late July, Tesla announced Freemont factory was closed for upgrades. Are these upgrades to the Model 3 production lines? Keep watching the refreshed Model 3 is close.
