Allbirds released an off-road shoe for hiking and walking made of Merino wool, Tencel, and SweetFoam (a foam made from sugarcane). These Trail Runner shoes are durable and offer stability and excellent traction when hiking. This trail shoe is comfortable and made 100% from sustainable materials, something Allbirds is known for. This shoe debut a new ripstop fabric, a grippy tread, and stabilizing support for the trail.

Ripstop fabrics are thin, lightweight, breathable, and waterproof. This fabric is often found for example, in the making of sails or tents as it is lightweight, strong, and resistant to ripping or tearing – so it holds up well to extreme conditions.
The Trail Runner has a tear-resistant upper with a mudguard shield and innovative water repellent fabric to keep your feet dry. The snug sock-like collars keep out the dirt and the bush. The sole grips the trail preventing a tumble or slip.

Trail runners are made in Vietnam. The upper part of the Trail Runner is made with a Tencel (eucalyptus tree fiber) and ZQ Merino Wool blend. ZQ is the world's leading ethical wool. Learn more about ZQ Wool.
The sole is a combination of ZQ Merino wool and recycled polyester ripstops. There is a layer of exclusive Allbirds SweetFoam midsole. SweetFoam is a carbon-negative bio-based EVA, made from sugarcane. Even the shoelaces are made from recycled plastic bottles. The heel lining is ZQ merino.
The Trail Runners are best used for hiking, walking and shorter distance trail running under 3 miles.
Wash your Trail Runners
You can wash your trail runners in the laundry machine in a delicates bag. Let them Air Dry then you are good to go. Use a gentle cycle and cold water. You wash the laces and inner-sole separately if you like.

Our Washington, DC. team of five put the Trail Runners to work at Rock Creek Park. Every day, they headed out to where they hiked or ran in Allbirds Trail Runners regardless of weather.
30 Day Trial Results
Overall, the shoes are really comfortable. The top of the toe box is a little tight until it adjusts to your foot. The Trail Runners has no tongue and have a sock-like opening, so they are a little more difficult to put on than regular shoes. The soles definitely grip the trail, and there was less slipping than with regular sneakers, especially in wet conditions. With over 300 miles hiked, walked, or run in 30 days, the team experienced wet, dry, muddy, and rocky trails with the Trail Runners. The shoe was stable on dry, loose gravel and thick, sloppy mud.

Trail Runners Style Score
The bright colors really pop on the trail. The bold colors and shoe style are outstanding, and they look good. After getting caught in a few surprise rain showers, we loved the ability to just throw Trail Runners in the washer and find dry shoes overnight.
A couple of team members thought the back of the heel collar was too high and required longer socks so the sock did not slip under the top of the collar while hiking causing blisters.
Overall, the Allbirds Trail Runners are super attractive and highly recommended for hiking, walking, and wearing around town.

Better for Short Trail Runs
Runners on the maybeyesno team liked the Trail Runners for shorter runs but were less impressed on longer than 2-3+ miles. The mid-sole support from the Sweatfoam midsole was responsive for 1 to 3-mile runs, but seem to lose support on longer runs.
These Trail Runners are great walking and short-distance running shoes but running long distances on the trail needs more cushion and more energy return on the foot strike. Directional changes made during runs did not seem to have enough support to keep the ankle from turning.

Wow A SOLID Golfing Shoe
Some of the group tried out the Trail Runners on a golf course and discovered them to be excellent for GOLFING! Go figure, they had just the right sole grip, support, and comfort for the full 18-hole outing. When teeing off, the shoe was stable during the swing. VERSATILE shoes at $140 are reasonably priced golf shoes. And the Trail Runners looked cool at the clubhouse – Go for it if you like to make a statement or are a casual non-competitive player.
