Proform Studio Bike Pro FAQs – Everything you want to know

Proform Studio Bike Pro Top FAQ’s

Whether you have already purchased either a Proform Studio Bike Pro 14 or Studio Bike Pro 22 or are in the middle of making a maybe.yes.no decision. We compiled a list of the most frequently asked reader questions with answers — From swapping out pedals and seats, using the Studio Bike Pro with iFit, plus answers to some questions on delivery and setup.

Nearly every question also applies to the Proform Studio Bike Pro 22 as well — Many readers ask how these bikes compare, so we begin with the first question highlighting the main differences between the Proform Studio Bike Pro 14 vs. the Studio Bike Pro 22.

Studio Bike Pro Hardware

Q. What is the main difference between a Proform Studio Bike Pro 14 and Studio Bike Pro 22?

Studio Bike Pro 14 vs. the Studio Bike Pro 22 Spin bike by Proform is the touchscreen size

Studio Bike Pro vs. Pro 22 model

  • An 8-inch bigger display. The Proform Studio Bike Pro 22 has a wider 22-inch HD touchscreen vs. 14 inches on the Studio Bike Pro 14.

  • The Touchscreen on a Studio Bike Pro 22 does not tilt. Meaning it cannot be adjusted forward or backward as with the Studio bike Pro 14. However, screens on both models can swivel 360 degrees for best viewing angle – for off-the-bike iFit cross-training sessions.

  • Studio Bike Pro 14 has 22 levels of resistance vs. 24 on the 22-inch model.

  • There are no longer any Quick-Touch console side buttons to adjust resistance on both bikes – you make all manual resistance adjustments using the touchscreen only. Both models support AutoAdjust, Dynamic trainer control for resistance changes in real-time.

  • The Studio bike Pro 22 ships with padded handlebars which we personally prefer from a comfort and feel point of view, a personal preference really.

Studio Bike Pro 22 HD Console (22-inch) and Handlebars

Our Take is that aside from the screen size both bikes are nearly identical to use and that it comes down to rider preference for display size and your budget.

There is a Proform Carbon CX Bike model that does away with the screen-display and allows you to use your own tablet or any smart device instead, then you are not tied to a subscription for workout content. That said, with excellent support for Bluetooth devices iFit workouts can then be cast to any wide smart TV screen.

Compare all Proform Studio Bikes

1.   Does the Studio Bike Pro automatically adjust your resistance?

Yes, iFit coaches can dynamically control the resistance and cadence of your bike in real-time as you cycle along with them in an iFit class on the trail, road, mountain rides, including in the studio – this allows you to better focus on the ride – This is real-time live interactive trainer-coaching. Trainers change your bike's resistance to step it up and make you work harder on the up-coming hills ahead. We loved this feature when using iFit-enabled bikes as it makes the workouts flow smoother, engaging, a lot more fun to do and of course very effective, your quads will burn!

There are 22 levels of resistance on the Studio Bike Pro and 24 levels on a Studio Bike Pro 22, if you prefer you can make your own adjustments to increase or decrease the intensity of the ride during a workout.

1a. Can you make your own resistance adjustments?

Yes. If you change the bike’s resistance yourself while taking an iFit workout you will be taken out of AutoAdjust control mode allowing you to adjust resistance easier or harder to suit your pace. You have an option on the touchscreen that will enable you to rejoin a class anytime by touching 'Follow Trainer' then the bike goes right back into trainer control mode.

1b. Does the Studio Bike Pro Incline and decline?

No, both the Studio Bike Pro and Studio Bike Pro 22 cannot incline or decline like a NordicTrack S22i Bike, or the S15i Studio Cycle (Available on Amazon) can. If the incline-decline feature is important to you head over to our comparison review on the Peloton Bike vs. S22i Studio Cycle.

2. What user heights are able to use this bike?

Recommended height for riders to be between 4’11” to 6’5”

Adjustments to the saddle can be easily made forward or aft (backward) 4” to be closer or further from the handlebars as well as the saddle post can be raised or lowered 13” vertically to suit your height. The handlebars can also be raised or lowered to suit your riding position preference. Later we provide saddle options to swap out over the one that ships with your bike.

The saddle can be adjusted for both vertical and horizontal adjustment, plus the handlebars can also be raised or lowered to suit your riding position preference

3. What is the weight capacity of the Studio Bike Pro?

Recommended maximum weight for Studio Bike Pro riders is: 250 lbs.

4. Can you swap out the Proform Studio Bike Pro pedals for clip-in shoe pedals?

For more power Studio Bike Pro bike pedals can be swapped out for clipless SPD or Delta Look pedals. Above Are Tiem Cycling Shoes found on Amazon - see below for more links

a.    YES, you can switch out pedals for clips-in ones so you can ride with clipless bike shoes. We recommend Shimano PD-ME700 SPD pedals which support SPD clips-in. Easy to replace, the Proform Studio Bike Pro pedals use 9/16 standard pedal thread, as does the Proform Studio Bike Pro 22. To change to clip-in pedals simply unscrew the ones on the bike and screw in the replacing clip-in pedals. The Shimano PD-ME700 SPD are one option, and they work well. You can Buy them at Amazon or shop there for other brands of pedals.

IMPORTANT INSTALL TIP: Remember to line-up each pedal for left and right as they each thread in opposite directions. That’s right, there is a pedal for the left and one for the right-hand side.

Some Shimano pedal models support a clip-on cleat on one side and have a toe cage type on the other side which is great if you are sharing your Spin-Bike with riders who prefer the cage style or just want to use sneakers to ride. The Venzo Shimano SPD Pedals with Toe Clips & Straps are very popular. Also, check out the Wellgo E229 Shimano SPD Compatible Pedals. Some other pedals we like are listed below and can also be found at Amazon.

More Bike Clip-in Pedals:

Shimano Ultegra PD-R8000 Pedals¹
Shimano Shimano EH-500 Pedals
BV Pedals Compatible with Peloton & S22i²
Wellgo    WPD-E003 Shimano SPD Compatible Indoor Bike Pedals ²

¹ These pedals are for with clip-in bike shoes only. Cleat included.
² Ride with TOE CLIP or CLIPLESS cycling shoes, cleats included.

b. With clip-in pedals your power and efficiency increase. Cycling shoes can be 30% more effective as your foot is connected to the pedal so it is easier on the pull. Being clipped in allows for more power exerted. Cycling shoes tend to have sifter platform soles so they are also more comfortable – especially on climbs. Additionally, Clip-in cycle shoes will not easily bend so the pressure is more evenly distributed throughout your sole.

Mountain (MTB) style bike shoes that use SPD cleats allow you to more easily walk around and do floor exercises off the bike as the cleat is recessed inside the shoe sole, so it is very convenient if you like to take workouts that contain off-the-bike cross-training segments. We recommend TIEM Cycle shoes below if this appeals to you.

Recommend Cycle Shoes:

You can clip in with TIEM Slipstream Cycling Shoes which are VERY POPULAR among Peloton and NordicTrack riders. You can find them at Amazon with Prime delivery, at sporting retail specialist REI online, or follow link below to read about 5 more bike shoe options.

High performance SHIMANO SH Cycling Shoes can be purchased for a lower price on Amazon It’s Recommend you size up as these shoes tend to run a little small and can run narrow.

For riders who need or prefer a wide shoe we have a great recommendation — the Sidi Alba 2 Mega Cycling Shoe. This is an excellent cycling shoe but, runs more expensive than those we mention above. It is a high-quality constructed shoe with most of the individual parts being replaceable once they’ve worn out. It comes with a 3-hole design that will work with Look Delta clips for Peloton or SPD cleats for the Proform Studio Bike Pro or Proform Studio Bike Pro 22

5. Does the Studio Bike Pro have a swivel screen for off the bike workouts?

YES, the Studio Bike Pro touchscreen swivels 360 degrees and tilts up and down so you can better participate in off-the-bike workout segments or other iFit cross-training options like yoga or strength training. This is a good practical feature (not found on the original Peloton Bike¹ and many other indoor bikes) making for much better flexible viewing. The Proform Studio Bike Pro 22 cannot tilt but does swivel the same.

¹ Peloton UPDATE: The Peloton Bike+ has added a swivel/pivot feature to the touchscreen – but you will pay $1,000 more for this bike plus $528 for the first year of Peloton classes. And the weights are not included.

6.   Can I cast to my big screen TV from the Studio Bike Pro console?

Not directly. But you can use the “Just Ride” Mode which disengages from iFit, and watch a nearby TV or use a tablet positioned over the screen to stream their own app content. There is also the NEW iFit TV app that allows you run iFit workouts on your TV. The iFit app is currently available for Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, and Google TV. Roku is also available to use.

6a. How do I mount a tablet on my Studio Bike Pro so I can use the Peloton app, Netflix or other apps?

A simple way to mount a tablet on a Studio Bike Pro is to purchase a clear plastic tablet holder (better than the color options which use a softer plastic) from Amazon. Put something between the holder and your bike screen, like small felt stick-on tabs to avoid scratches. Place the bike in “Just Ride” mode (manual mode) or mute the sound on one of your favorite workouts and sweat away to the Peloton instructor motivational chatter and blast the music! Follow this link to see another Phone-tablet holder option on Amazon.

If you want to watch Netflix or other apps on your console, go to question 13 below for the steps for a workaround to download and watch NetFlix and other apps.

7. Does iFit have Music with its classes

iFit recently expanded its music library with 11 new music stations to choose from for your workouts. A good upgrade for iFit members.

Music types are divided up by genre below. Music Stations include:

♫ Pop Throwback
♫ Hip-Hop Throwback
♫ Up Tempo Pop remixes
♫ Top 40 Pop
♫ Dance EDM (club music)
♫ Classic Rock
♫ Rock
♫ Country
♫ 80’s pop
♫ Downtempo Yoga

To change music options on your iFit device follow these steps:

1. Tap the screen during warmup or during your workout.
2. Tap the audio settings button
3. Tap the music tab

Then select the Station you want by tapping on it.

You can always use your own music or your Rock My Run membership (included for free with your iFit membership, just login in using the primary iFit holder’s credentials) which has a wide range of music to up the amp on your workout.

7a.   Does the Studio Bike Pro have pop music?

Music was not an iFit strong point. Music licensing can be difficult and is expensive. iFit originally added popular mainstream music from FEED.FM providing two channels, one for upbeat cardio and the other a calming yoga collection. This has been superseded by the 10 new popular music channel options outlined above in Q.7.

You can always listen to your own music and still have the instructors control your bike. Just turn the music down and listen to your own mix while still hearing the instructor on the screen as there are separate controls for music and instructor volume. When you click the volume, 3 options appear on your screen: master volume, trainer, and music. You can find cool Peloton mixes on Spotify. Put in the instructors’ names like Cody Rigsby, Robin Arzon, Ally Love to find specific lists. You can also find great cardio and cycle playlists on Amazon music (free with Prime). Use a lightning to 3.5 mm aux. audio cable and play music through the bike. Cable available online at Target or Amazon.

You can use other music apps for studio classes on your smartphone, tablet, or mirror to a smart TV screen if you want more music-focused spin classes. The downside is you will miss out on the trainer-controlled resistance and lose integrated rider stats.

7c. How to turn off the music on iFit?

To completely turn music off, simply tap the screen within a workout, then tap the “Music On Music Off” icon to turn music off. You can always turn it back on anytime you decide.

Alternatively, you can make volume adjustments > When you click the volume, 3 options should appear on your screen: master volume, trainer, and music. Just slide the music all the way down as much as you like, and you shouldn't be able to hear it.

More ADVANCED Option: Block feed.fm in your router. If you have Feed.fm
You can blacklist feed.fm at your router, for no music and no title box appearance on the screen. IP address for feed.fm is 35.162.81.245 if this is the way you want to go.

8. Does the Proform Studio Bike Pro have Bluetooth?

Use wireless earbuds or headphones with iFit

Yes, iFit supports Bluetooth 5.0. headphones including Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro. After you select and Tap start workout, you will see the “Connect to headphones” button appear (If you have the latest iFit version) from one of 4 places: the warm-up screen, On the pause screen, next to the volume slider, on the cool-down screen. Pick the model of your headphones from the on-screen list, making sure your headphones are on and in pairing mode. Volume will be automatically set at 5%. You can adjust to a higher or lower setting using the volume slider on the screen.

9.   Can I use wireless Bluetooth headphones like Apple AirPods or Airpod Pro?

Yes. Tap the “Connect to headphones” button in iFit and select your wireless headphones from the list – For more advanced access to Bluetooth you can use the advanced Admin Mode steps outlined in Q. 13 below.

For quick Free Prime delivery get your Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro from Amazon.

10. Does the Studio Bike Pro have any pre-downloaded workouts?

No, the Studio Bike Pro and the Studio Bike Pro 22 do not have pre-loaded workouts and courses, but you get personalized interactive training with iFit. With the Studio Bike Pro 22 the first 30 days of iFit is included.

You can use manual mode to work out to your own sessions from other apps such as Apple Fitness+, casting from a tablet or smartphone to watch on a wide screen TV.

11. Will my butt hurt from riding the Studio Bike Pro during first few weeks?

Give your body 10 days of active use to acclimate and adjust. It should get better and go away. If you prefer you can always swap out the saddle for a more padded and/or wider seat version. Below are some popular seat options readers like that can be found Amazon along with padded bike seat covers.

12. Are there WiFi issues with iFit?

Mostly due to your internet at home depending on connectivity with your WiFi router. If you have WiFi issues you can try a Wi-Fi booster which does seem to solve most home internet issues with iFit. The Google Wi-Fi Router works better than an extender and also comes in 2 or 3 packs with extra pods. Check it out at Amazon and read the verified review comments, you’ll find some good internet tips there. TIP: It is always a good idea to do an iFit Systems Status check prior to troubleshooting. You can use any browser or device to do this. Here you will find a page that shows you if there are any system issues. If you scroll down, you can find a listing of past & current incidents. No, out of the box you cannot play other media on the bike console at this time – if this is important for you, see work-around below or see answer 6a above to use a tablet to achieve this.

There is a workaround to download and watch NetFlix and other apps if you gain access to Privileged mode.

STEPS: How to access Privileged Mode? [ADMIN MODE]

Go to the settings mode > go to maintenance > then in the space below the options, in the empty white space.… Tap the same spot 10 times. Wait 5-7 seconds Tap the same spot 10 more times. It will then pop up that "privileged mode is enabled" If you do it again, it will disable privileged mode. When you enable it, you can drag down from the top and get access to the menu bar > go into android settings. You can also swipe up from the bottom and get to the default apps - it has a browser, camera, iFit admin, and the iFit cardio app.

The following steps is equipment running on Android 5.1. Through the Android browser you can navigate to netflix.com. Login and then click on your name and click help center. Search for APK and open first article. Then look for “click here to download NetFlix app”. Go to downloads and click the downloaded file. Next click the “install” prompt and you are ready to watch NetFlix. Watch this YouTube video for complete steps on How to install Netflix on your Proform Studio Bike Pro or Studio Bike Pro 22 with Android 5.1. Referenced is NordicTrack’s S22i Bike and X22i/X32i treadmills but these steps also work on ProForm.

14.   Does the Proform Studio Bike Pro have a Fan?

No, the Proform Studio Bike Pro does not have a fan. If you tend to get too hot when working-out either because your home-gym is located in the basement or a room with poor air circulation — we suggest a fan. Here are three reasonable recommendations under $60 we like that you can find at Amazon:

Molly Loves her Proform Studio Pro 22 Bike adding variety to her basement home gym rowing, and treadmill workouts. Use regular sneakers or quickly swap out the pedals for clip-in SPD pedals

15.  How to turn off Proform Studio Bike Pro

The only way is to unplug the power adapter from the wall. One popular suggestion is to use an APC Smart Plug Wi-Fi Power Strip with USB ports, which you can find at Amazon, or this model power strip comes without USB ports. Or the Kasa Smart Plug Power Strip HS300. This one works well with Alexa and provides good surge protection. “Alexa turn off my bike” or “Alexa I’m ready to Ride

Proform offers the first month of iFit membership free with your exercise equipment across its treadmills, bikes, rowers, elliptical, and strength trainers with the goal of helping you achieve your wellness goals for fitness or weight loss.

AutoAdjust

A unique aspect iFit offers over other connected fitness apps is that trainers can live-control (AutoAdjust) your speed, resistance, incline, or decline to sync with live or on-demand classes. Even on the destination classes as the terrain you are biking through changes in the Austrian Alps series, for example, your trainer changes it up for the upcoming hill so your bike actually inclines, and resistance may increase depending on the workout level you selected. ¹ if you bike supports incline/decline feature.

Workout options are best categorized into four types: Studio classes, Road Races, Google Maps and Trainer Led Destination classes. You have loads of options to pick from and the classes vary by trainer, length, difficulty and type – with new classes and content constantly being added.

Under the Proform Plus+ Program iFit family membership COSTS JUST ABOUT $1 PER DAY. For most Proform, NordicTrack and FreeMotion equipment, the first 30 days of an iFit subscription is included – a $39 Value. 5.   Does the Studio Bike Pro have a leader-board?

iFit Leaderboard allows you to complete with other riders or against yourself for personal bests on Live and on-demand workouts

Originally Yes, but currently this feature has been withdrawn until further notice.

The leaderboard tracked everyone who has ever taken a ride and allowed you to filter by age, beginner, advanced, etc., and against your own results. Race against friends, family, even just yourself. Again, unique to iFit is that the leaderboard took into account whether you paused a workout, made incline, speed, or resistance adjustments.

If you prefer, you could hide individuals from the leaderboard who have paused or modified a workout session. Hopefully we seen its return.

6.  Can you Pause an iFit workout?

Yes, you can. Just tap the middle of the screen and you will then be offered a pause button option to pause for 10 minutes. If you stop pedaling the pause screen appears and you can pause your workout. When a workout is paused, a yellow dot is visible on the leaderboard above your name to indicate that your workout was modified or paused, and the Paused Workout screen pops up with the ten-minute timer. With this feature, you select to pause/stop the current ride for 10 minutes and repeat again if you want to extend the pause.

6a.  How can other people appear on my leaderboard?

Prior to its removal you could have other riders follow you and be visible on your leaderboard. For this to work you had to follow members and have them follow you back in order to have them show-up on your displayed leaderboard.

Yes. These was, by Tapping the right upper corner or swipe right to hide it.

8. Does the Studio Bike Pro have live classes?

Currently only some live events. You will see the On Air icon blinking at the bottom right-hand corner of the touchscreen when a live session is airing. You can choose to join by pressing this icon.

During the Pandemic
there were also cross-training off-the-bike live sessions, such as boxing, core, and yoga. iFit trainers aired live classes in the studio and from their home-gym workout spaces which was kind of fun – if you arrived early, you could ask trainers questions via text. Trainers called out participants during a class. Live session classes may resume down the road we are told.

YES, After 200 workouts: entered to win a 1 free year of iFit added to your membership.

You can download an app to a Roku or Amazon Fire TV stick and watch on any TV screen. [See 6a. answer in hardware section above] – How to mount a tablet on my Studio Bike Pro so I can use the Peloton app, Netflix or other apps. iFit has also introduced iFit TV that allows you watch the same workout you are taking on your bike on a big HD TV – works great for awesome views and rides.

You also have the option to mirror/screen share from a tablet/phone to a smart TV directly. Just be sure to put your Studio Bike Pro in manual mode and you use your smart device to mirror a class or cast an app to your TV.

11.   How many users can an iFit Pro account have?

You can have up to a total of 5 individuals with separate usernames. The primary user sends an email invite to up to 4 other members to set up their own individual iFit profile that tracks workout statistics and settings separately.

This makes iFit Pro interactive training super-good value for a family or any shared living situation where you have multiple people wanting to ride or use other iFit enabled fitness equipment. An iFit subscription will support addtional Proform or Nordictrack exercise equipment from a Treadmill or elliptical to rowing machines, without any extra costs or monthly charges.

14.   Do iFit rides simulate hills and scenery?

Yes, a cool and unique feature of iFit technology, which you will not find on other exercise equipment, including the Original Peloton Bike. (The Peloton Bike+ does support resistance control but not actual incline/declines of bike models).

iFit enables trainers to automatically control and adjust resistance on the Studio Bike Pro to sync with a studio class you’re taking or to match the destination terrain you are biking, running, walking or hiking on so you can focus on your workout.

Studio Bike Pro riders love this option! You ride with a trainer leading you and encouraging on to maintain RPMs plus reminding you when the intensity gets harder of the correct form, posture and breathing.

ASSEMBLY, DELIVERY & SETUP

1.   Is the Studio Bike Pro easy to assemble?

YES, it is very do-able, assembly takes less than 30 minutes once unboxed. Overall, it’s straight-forward for most but, you may want an extra pair of hands when connecting the wires inside the console mount post to the console. The most tedious part is carefully unpacking, separating, and laying out all the pieces as it comes extremely well packed - even if the shipping box looks a little worse for wear.

Not a [DYI] Do it yourself Person?

If you not a do it yourself type then may we suggest using TaskRabbit.com, or even better Amazon Assembly Services. Even your local Bike store is an option, to hire and assemble the bike.

All hardware, screws, bolts, and washers are clearly labeled, and ship sealed with Allen-keys (4 and 6 mm) you’ll need and includes a wrench to attach the pedals. You should have handy a Phillips screwdriver, scissors, a safe sharp box cutter, and if you own one an adjustable wrench to make it easier when tightening parts.

The body of the bike with flywheel comes assembled in one piece. You then are left to attach the front and rear base-stabilizers, attach the seat post and saddle (seat), then the handlebars post, and handlebars themselves. Finally, mount the console, making final adjustments, and tighten.

2. Can you put the bike on carpet?

Yes, no issues with this placement. The bike itself is very stable and does not wobble but we do recommend a good mat. There may be some possible wear to your carpet so you may want to consider buying a high-density equipment mat to also catch sweat and large enough to do some off the bike cross-training. Your knees will thank you.

Want to use a MAT with your Bike:

We really like Gorilla Mats. You can find them and also shop a ton of other less expensive brands like Amazon Basics or from CyclingDeal Mat (36" x 72")

Proform Studio Bikes works well on Carpet, but you probably want to consider an exercise mat

3.   How big is the box the Studio Bike Pro ships in?

The Studio Bike Pro ships in one box with dimensions when stood up 32.63" H X 15.03" W X 43.65" L

We recommend opening the box in the room you are going to use the Studio Bike Pro bike in

4. How much does the Proform Studio Bike Pro weigh?

  • The Proform Studio Bike Pro weighs 140.5 lbs boxed.

  • The Proform Studio Pro 22 weighs 144 lbs boxed.

5. Why does iFit want an additional user to pick a plan when trying to login on to the family plan?

Additional users are added by an invite e-mail initiated from the primary profile. If you try to set up an account without going through the invite email, iFit thinks you want a new and completely separate account.

Log into your account as the primary user (master account) and add a member. You have to send an invite email for each additional user so they can create and setup their own profile once they verify their email address. Then you would see a status for each user if they accepted or not.

6.   How do I activate the free iFit membership? Should I be looking for a card or a code?

Yes, there is a card and/or a peel-off sticker inside the box “BEFORE FIRST USE” with an activation code and the web URL address to go to and use your code. You should also receive an email to set up your iFit account when you purchase from Proform before delivery. When your equipment arrives, you can add the code on your bike touchscreen after connecting your bike to iFit via Wi-Fi.
