“a good option for people who say they are too busy to exercise is that any amount of running is better than none. Even a little running on a regular basis can help you live longer and reduce depression.

According to a very recent study first published Nov. 4 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.¹ Lead researcher Zeljko Pediscic, Institute for Health and Sport, Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia said they analyzed 14 studies that included more than 232,000 people whose health was tracked for between 5.5 and 35 years. The data showed that any amount of running was associated with a 30% lower risk of death from heart disease, and a 23% lower risk of death from cancer. Even as little as 50 minutes of running once a week at a pace slower than 6 mph appeared to be preventative.

Findings recently published by Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In a paper published in the journal Depression and Anxiety, reported that individuals who genetically were more likely to suffer from depression who did some type of exercise for least several hours each week were less likely to be diagnosed with a new episode of depression. In fact 35 minutes per day of physical activity was recommended.

“Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, genes are not destiny and that being physically active has the potential to neutralize the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically vulnerable,” said Karmel Choi of MGH and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the lead author of the study. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”

The study was supported in part by the National Institute of Mental Health and National Human Genome Research Institute as well as the Demarest Lloyd Jr. Foundation.
